Joséphine,
empress of the arts and passionate about botany
“Joséphine de Beauharnais”, beyond her famous imperial marriage, nurtured two passions: one for art, the other for botany.
Thanks to innumerable commissions from the greatest creators of the time (painters, cabinetmakers, jewellers, decorators…) she built up an invaluable collection and encouraged the development of artists who are reference points today. The room dedicated to her at the Domaine de Prin is a tribute to this eternal ambassador of French taste.
Another meeting point with our guest rooms in Champagne is Joséphine’s passion for botany and for nature in the broadest sense. Joséphine helped introduce many floral species to France, including plants of subtropical origin. The collections of the Château de la Petite Malmaison, nurtured by Josephine’s will, have been a treasure for French nurserymen. She also organised a real menagerie at the Malmaison, which served as an observatory for the teachers of the National Museum of Natural History.
